Football rolls past Texas Lutheran

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team rolled past Texas Lutheran Saturday afternoon in Belton, earning a commanding 49-3 win over the Bulldogs. UMHB improved to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference action while Texas Lutheran fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in league play.
 
Aphonso Thomas scored on the Cru's first offensive play from scrimmage, breaking open a 53-yard run for six points. Kyle King continued that momentum on the Cru's next drive, throwing a 50-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Miller for another Cru score. Brandon Jordan caught another King touchdown pass to close out the first quarter with a 21-0 UMHB lead.
 
UMHB added two more scores in the second quarter off a touchdown pass to Gary Ruckman and a three-yard punch from King. Miller added his second touchdown of the day on a seven-yard grab in the 3rd quarter before Montana Miller ran in a five-yard score in the fourth. UMHB's defense held the Bulldogs scoreless until 2:10 remaining in the game when Juan Ocampo kicked in a 43-yard field goal to put Texas Lutheran on the board.
 
UMHB totaled 253 yards rushing and 202 yards in the air for 455 yards of total offense. King anchored the Cru throwing 16-25 for 180 yards and four touchdowns. King added 33 yards on the ground with another score. Thomas led UMHB's rushing attack with 136 yards and a score while K.J. Miller led the Cru with 92 receiving yards on six grabs and two touchdowns.
 
Defensively, UMHB held the Bulldogs to just 124 total yards of offense and nine first downs. Omari Frazier led the Cru with nine total tackles while Jacob Mueller added eight and a sack. Johnny Smith-Rider forced a TLU fumble and recovered it, adding six tackles while Keith Gipson had two tackles and an interception.
 
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, October 23rd in a 12 p.m. kickoff at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
