ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team made the most of its seven-hour trip to Alpine, taking a 72-14 win over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Cru to 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in American Southwest Conference action. The Lobos fell to 1-5 in both categories with the loss.
UMHB's offense opened the game with a missed red-zone opportunity, but responded with a
Kyle King two-yard touchdown punch at the 5:32 mark. The Cru rallied from there, putting up 31 points in the second quarter.
K.J. Miller opened the quarter with an 88-yard punt return to put the Cru up two scores before
Anthony Avila sailed a 35-yard field goal for a 17-point lead.
T.J. Deshields responded for the Lobos with 7:24 left, throwing a 52-yard touchdown pass to Vicente Luevano. UMHB closed out the quarter with three more scores in the final 3:59 of action.
Aphonso Thomas ran in a one-yard punch before King found Miller in the end zone for another score.
Brandon Jordan scored the Cru's final touchdown of the half, catching a 40-yard pass from King.
Sul Ross State opened the third quarter with an 80-yard touchdown pass but was shutout for the remained of the contest. UMHB responded with a 30-yard touchdown pass to
Brenton Martin before
Connor Mullins caught a scoring pass form
Ryan Redding for six more points. UMHB entered the third quarter 52-14 and added 20 more points in the final 15 minutes of play. Redding rushed for 14 yards and a score at 14:44 then threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Martin at 11:45.
Aaron Sims was the final Crusader to find the end zone, catching a 68-yard pass from Redding to give the Cru its 72-14 win.
UMHB totaled 573 yards of offense in the contest, putting up 365 in the air.
Kyle King threw 9-for-14 with three touchdowns while
Ryan Redding played in relief. Redding went 10-for-13 for 201 yards and three scores. Thomas led the Cru's rushing game with 86 yards on 14 carries while Kenneth Cormier Jr. had 84 yards on nine carries. Martin caught a team-high five passes for 106 yards and two scores, followed by
Gary Ruckman and Jordan with four catches each.
Defensively, UMHB limited the Lobos to just 219 yards of offense.
Durand Hill led the Cru with five tackles while a host of other Crusaders each added three. Sante Parker Jr. led the Cru with two tackles for loss, followed by
Jacob Mueller with 1.5. UMHB also had a pair of takeaways on a Parker fumble recovery and a
Keith Gipson interception.
Miller was the special teams' leader, returning two punts for 123 yards and a score.
Jefferson Fritz added one punt return for 35 yards and one punt for 42 yards.
UMHB returns to Crusader Stadium on Saturday, October 30
th in a noon kickoff against Belhaven. UMHB will offer free trick-or-treating around the stadium during the first half of action for kids in Halloween costumes.
