BELTON, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team tied Hardin-Simmons University for the second time in program history Sunday in the 2021 American Southwest Conference Women's Soccer Championship.
UMHB totaled five shots in the first half, putting two on frame. The Cowgirls put three of their six shots on frame but the first 45 minutes played scoreless. The teams returned to action in the second half with HSU out-shooting the Cru 11-3. The Cowgirls totaled six shots on frame but
Reagan Williams made six saves to preserve the shutout and force overtime.
Both teams saw scoring opportunities in the overtime periods but a pair of saves from Williams sent the championship match to penalty kicks.
Ashley Vensel made her penalty kick on the Cru's first attempt but UMHB was unable to convert another, losing the title to the Cowgirls by a penalty-kick score of 3-1.
Williams totaled 11 saves in the shutout tie, playing the full 110 minutes plus penalty kick action. Vensel led the Cru with five shots in the contest, putting three on frame. UMHB totaled 11 shots in the match while the Cowgirls totaled 21.
The Cru finished as the Runners-Up in the 2021 ASC Championship Tournament. Chandler Jones,
Shay Taylor and
Kristen Burdick were all named to the ASC All-Championship Tournament Team after their performance in the conference tournament.
