BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team dominated overtime to earn a 79-68 win over the University of Texas at Dallas Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Comets fell to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
The game played scoreless through the first minute and a half with the Comets breaking the drought at 8:29 with a three-pointer from Paris Kiser. UT Dallas hit a pair of free throws to go up 5-0 before
Bethany McLeod put the Cru on the board with a three-pointer at 7:41. UMHB evened the contest at 7-7 at the 4:10 mark and the game played back and forth from there, ending in a 16-16 first-quarter tie.
UMHB led by as many as six points in the second quarter but the Comets fought back, tying the contest at 24 with 4:37 left in the second half. UT Dallas went on a run from there, leading by as many as four points and ending the half with a two-point lead.
The third quarter played evenly with the Cru holding a three-point lead before the Comets evened the score early in the fourth. UT Dallas led by as many as eight points with 3:33 left in regulation but UMHB fought back. The Cru cut the lead to two points several times but the Comets hit their foul shots to stay ahead by two possessions.
Arieona Rosborough hit a jumper with 33 seconds left in regulation to cut the lead to two.
Kasey Jo Hinton recorded a steal with seven seconds left before Rosborough hit a jumper as time expired, sending the game into overtime with a 63-63 regulation score.
UMHB dominated the overtime period, outscoring the Comets 16-5 to earn the 79-68 win. UMHB shot 42.9 percent in the period and limited the Comets to an 18.2 percent showing. McLeod led the Cru with 19 total points, followed by Rosborough with 14 and
Ashley Faux with 10.
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen led UMHB with 11 rebounds followed by
Aja Holmes with 10. McLeod was also UMHB's assist leader, totaling five in the contest while Kollmorgen had a team-high three steals. UMHB forced 18 turnovers in the contest and held the Comets to a 26.6 shooting percentage.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, December 18
th in a 1 p.m. contest against LeTourneau University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
