ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team used a second-half offensive-surge to gain a double-digit lead over McMurry University Thursday evening in Abilene, beating the War Hawks 86-67 in the Cru's first ASC road game of the season.
The first half played closely with each team leading four separate times. UMHB pulled away late with a 12-7 run in the final five minutes of action.
Carson Hammond hit a three-pointer at the 3:58 mark before
Josiah Johnson followed suit at 3:16. UMHB held a five-point lead but the War Hawks cut it to three with 2:13 left in the half. A layup from
Luke Feely and a jumper by
Kyle Wright gave UMHB 41 total points in the half. The Cru allowed a layup with three seconds left, but went into the break with a five-point advantage.
UMHB opened the second half with a 10-2 run, highlighted by three-pointers from
Sam Reaves and
Ty Prince. The Cru maintained a double-digit lead through the remainder of the half, cruising to a 19-point win over the War Hawks.
Johnson led UMHB with 31 points while Prince added 18 and Reaves totaled 10. Prince also led UMHB with eight boards, followed by Johnson and
Gibson Hearne with six each. UMHB shot 47.9 percent in the contest with an 11-for-36 showing from beyond the arc. The Cru outrebounded McMurry 39-34, scoring 17 points off 18 forced War Hawk turnovers.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, December 11
th in a 3 p.m. contest at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
