ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Sul Ross State University, beating the Lobos 7-5 before falling 3-2 in the second match. UMHB moved to 14-10 overall and 9-6 in American Southwest Conference action while the Lobos went to 8-7 overall and 8-5 in league action.
Elissa Elliott gave UMHB a lead in the first game, scoring in the top of the first on an error.
Izzy Gutierrez slammed a three-RBI home run in the top of the next frame to extend UMHB's lead to four runs. Sul Ross State answered with a run in the bottom of that frame and added two more runs in the third inning after UMHB scored
Bailey Wagner on an RBI single from
Elisabeth Paul. The Lobos cut the lead to one run going into the seventh but UMHB scored a pair of runs off an RBI single from
Milly Cesare and a stolen base. Sul Ross State added just one more run, ending the game in a 7-5 UMHB win. Five different Crusaders recorded hits for the Cru while Gutierrez led UMHB with three RBI and Elliott and Wagner each recorded a team-high two runs.
Bayleigh Grogan earned the win in the circle for UMHB, giving up four earned runs and 12 hits in the contest.
Camryn Rucker earned the save for the Cru, pitching 0.1 innings with just one hit. UMHB totaled seven runs on five hits with two errors while the Lobos had five runs on 13 hits with two errors.
The Lobos led through six innings of the second contest, putting up single-run frames in the third and fifth innings. UMHB evened the contest with two outs in the seventh inning when
Tyeann Johnson and
Kennedy Kalka both scored. Samantha Chavez hit in the game-winning run for the Lobos in the bottom of that frame, scoring Alexis Gonzales for the 3-2 Lobo win.
Lexi Harris led UMHB with two hits while
Allyse Castillo,
Bailey Eggleston and
Bailey Wagner each added one.
Camryn Rucker pitched five innings for the Cru with four hits and two runs allowed.
Kami Flores took the loss for UMHB, throwing 1. 2 innings with three hits and one run allowed. UMHB totaled two runs on five hits with one error while Sul Ross State had three runs on seven hits with three errors.
UMHB and the Lobos close out the series tomorrow in an 11 a.m. single game in Alpine.
