BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team came from behind to tie UT Dallas 1-1 in the semifinal round of the 2020-21 American Southwest Conference Tournament. The game ended in a tie with the Comets winning 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the championship match.
UTD's Sierra Foster scored with 34 seconds left in the first half, giving the Comets a 1-0 lead at halftime. UMHB outshot the Comets 12-6 in the half, putting three total shots on frame. UMHB opened the second half with several scoring opportunities.
Kristen Burdick scored the equalizer for UMHB in the 67
th minute, hitting in a shot off a corner kick from
Zoe Elledge. UMHB put six of 15 shots on frame that half, but UTD goalkeeper Megan Hannah made five saves to send the contest into overtime.
Both teams put two shots on frame in the overtime periods but neither was able to score, sending the contest into a shootout.
Emmy McMaude made a one-arm save on UTD's first attempt while
Emily Blaettner scored on hers, giving UMHB a 1-0 lead. McMaude made a save in the Comets' second attempt, but the referee ruled that McMaude left her line early, giving Keely Fillman another attempt. Fillman converted and Hannah saved the Cru's shot, tying the penalty kick round at 1-1. Both goalkeepers made saves against the third shooters before
Tyler Pierce and Yuli Cruz converted on back-to-back attempts to tie the round at 3-3. UTD scored on their sixth shooter and Hannah saved the Cru's attempt, advancing the Comets to the championship match with a 4-3 win in penalty kicks.
UMHB ends the season at 7-1-1 overall. The Cru graduates five seniors in Blaettner, Elledge, McMaude,
Kennedy Clark and
Saige Serigny.
