ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team extended its win streak to 6-0 with a 3-0 sweep over Sul Ross State University Tuesday evening in Alpine.
The Cru beat Sul Ross State University 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 to earn the win.
Hannah Frasca led UMHB with a double-double in the match. Frasca hit 10 kills and added 13 digs against the Lobos.
Lauren Williams was UMHB's kill leader, recording 11 on 23 total attacks while
Kayla Janikula added 10 more.
Alli Pierce anchored UMHB's offensive efforts with 39 assists. UMHB hit .244 in the match, totaling 45 kills. Defensively,
Alyssa Christiansen totaled 13 digs while
Alli Pierce added ten and
Maddie Gillispie brought up nine. Janikula was the defensive leader at the net, going up for four blocks. UMHB totaled 62 digs and five team blocks in the match. Sul Ross hit 38 kills on 131 attacks with 61 digs.
"The match was much closer than the scores appear," Head Coach
Mark Pryor said. "Learning how to handle success is something this group has to deal with. There is no doubt the talent is there, this team just needs to embrace how great they can be and own the fact that being great is an every day thing."
UMHB also moved to No. 12 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The Cru jumped three spots with 1,150 points after an opening-weekend that resulted in five 3-0 wins for the Cru. Trinity University is No. 1 with 2,123 points and a 4-0 record on the season. Emory University and John's Hopkins are tied for second with 2,057 points, Colorado College is fourth with 2,007 points and Carthage is fifth with 1,826 points. Trinity leads all teams with 53 first-place votes, followed by John's Hopkins with 22, Emory with eight, Colorado College with six and Carthage with one.
The Cru returns to action on Friday, September 10
th in a 6 p.m. match against East Texas Baptist University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
