BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team earned a 94-81 win over Sul Ross State University Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 11-1 this season with a 6-1 record in American Southwest Conference action. Sul Ross State fell to 5-8 overall and dropped to 2-6 in league play.
The first half saw six lead changes with UMHB taking the final lead at the 3:41 mark.
Gibson Hearne hit a three-pointer to put UMHB up by two before
Josiah Johnson closed out the half with seven consecutive points to give UMHB a 44-35 first-half advantage.
The Cru opened the second half with a dunk by
Luke Feely to go ahead by 11 points. UMHB led by double-digits for more than six minutes before the Lobos cut the lead to seven. Hearne hit back-to-back threes to put the Cru up by 13 points with 8:42 left in the half. UMHB led by as many as 18 in the remainder of the contest, finishing with a 94-81 win over the Lobos.
Johnson led the Cru with 22 points while
Nathan Stolz added 18.
Luke Feely added 16 points for the Cru, followed by Hearne with 15 and
Carson Hammond with 14. Feely was UMHB's rebound leader, totaling nine in the contest followed by Johnson with seven. Johnson and Feely both recorded a team-high five assists while Johnson also added four steals.
UMHB shot 43.3 percent in the contest, going 22-for-25 in foul shots. The Cru scored 24 points in the paint with 25 points off turnovers and 18 second-chance scores.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, January 8
th in a 3 p.m. contest against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
