BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 92-81 win over Sul Ross State University Thursday evening in Belton, improving to 7-0 in American Southwest Conference action. UMHB's overall record improved to 10-2 with the win while the Lobos fell to 6-7 on the season and 2-6 in league play.
UMHB jumped to a 13-4 lead in the first quarter, led by
Cheyanne Bonilla with four points. The Lobos evened the quarter at 14 with 58 seconds left but a three-pointer from Bonilla and jumper from
Alexia Martin gave UMHB a five-point lead. Ashley Nunez hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining cutting the Cru's advantage to two points at the end of the quarter.
Sul Ross State evened the contest again at 21 but five consecutive points from
Arieona Rosborough gave the Cru another lead. UMHB held on to that lead and slowly built from there, leading by as many as 10 points and entering halftime up six points.
The Cru did not trail again, holding a double-digit lead through most of the third quarter. The Lobos cut the lead to two points early in the fourth but
Ashley Faux and Rosborough combined for 10 points to put UMHB up by double-digits again. The Cru closed out the contest with a 7-2 run, led by Rosborough with four points.
Rosborough led the Cru with 26 points in the contest, shooting 50 percent from the field and draining 10 of 11 free throws.
Alexia Martin added 16 points for the Cru while
Ashley Faux added 13 and
Bethany McLeod and
Aja Holmes both added 11. Rosborough also led UMHB with 10 rebounds and seven assists in the contest. Faux and Holmes each added eight boards while McLeod matched Rosborough's seven assists.
UMHB shot 48.4 percent from the field and did not trail in the contest. The Cru had 42 points in the paint with 22 points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, January 8
th in a 1 p.m. contest against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
