KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used a last-second shot to earn a 64-61 win over Schreiner University Wednesday evening in Kerrville. The win improved the Cru to 3-0 on the season while the Mountaineers fell to 3-5.
UMHB jumped to a 10-2 lead early in the first quarter with
Arieona Rosborough and
Ashley Faux each contributing four points to the run. The Mountaineers fought back with back-to-back shots form Kayla Alvarado to cut the deficit to one possession. UMHB held the lead with three consecutive buckets by
Catherine Kaiser to end the first quarter up 20-16.
Schreiner tied the contest less than a minute into the second quarter and regained the lead at the 6:47 mark. The Cru fought back, leading by as many as five points in the quarter. UMHB held on to the lead through the half, going into halftime with a 34-32 advantage.
Neither team scored until 1:15 into the third when
Catherine Kaiser hit another shot for a 36-32 Cru lead. UMHB extended that lead to eight and held advantage until the 00:23 mark when the Mountaineers scored to even the game at 46. A pair of Rosborough free throws gave the Cru the lead once again but a layup from Elisa Peralta as time expired ended the third with a 48-point knot.
The Mountaineers took an early lead in the fourth quarter and held advantage until the 2:28 mark when
Ashley Faux hit a jumper to tie the contest at 56. UMHB took a two-point lead after that off a pair of free throws but Schreiner fought back to tie it at 58 with 1:37 left to play. A Jaycie Brisco jumper and a free throw from Rosborough gave UMHB another three-point lead, but Demauria Miles tied it with a shot beyond the arc at 00:43. The game stayed knotted until the five-second mark when the Cru inbounded the ball and quickly got it to Kaiser for the go-ahead score. Kaiser made the ensuing free throw for the three-point lead as the Cru defense held on for the 64-61 win.
Arieona Rosborough led the Cru with 17 points, followed by Kaiser with 15 and
Ashley Faux with 14. Faux and Jaycie Brisco each recorded a team-high nine rebounds while Addy Self and Rosborough each added eight. Payton Hicks led the Cru with five assists as the Cru shot 36% in the contest. UMHB totaled 44 points in the paint and 23 points off turnovers in the contest.
Nariyah Buggs led Schreiner with 17 points as the Mountaineers shot 38.3 percent in the contest. Schreiner totaled 30 points from the bench with 15 points off turnovers.
