SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team was edged by the University of Puget Sound 59-58 on a buzzer-beater in the final second. The Cru fell to 7-3 on the season while the Loggers improved to 9-1 overall.
UMHB took a quick 10-3 advantage, led by
Addy Self with four points. The Loggers answered with a basket behind the arc at the 3:47 mark to cut the gap to four. First quarter play remained scoreless from there, until the Cru added one more score with 10 seconds left on the clock with a
Weade Adeleke free throw.
The second quarter saw even play until the 7:31 mark when the Loggers when on a seven-point run to knot-up the game 18-18. Puget Sound continued with a six-point run followed by a five-point run to establish their first lead and cruised to a 33-26 advantage at the half.
The Loggers claimed the first basket of the half before UMHB went on an eight-point run, led by
Arieona Rosborough to cut the gap to one with four minutes remaining. The Cru retook the lead 40-37 on a six-point run by
Katelen Brooks at the 2:28 mark. The Loggers answered with an 8-1 run to end the quarter ahead 45-44.
Puget Sound opened the fourth quarter on a four-point run, but their lead was short lived when the Cru answered with a 10-2 point run to go up by five. The Loggers fought back cutting the Cru's lead to one with 1:07 left on the clock. Puget Sound secured the 59-58 victory after sinking a jump shot in the final second of play.
Rosborough recorded a double-double on the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brooks,
Payton Hicks and Adeleke each added eight points to UMHB's 58 total. The Cru recorded 32 points in the paint and 11 points off second chance scores.
UMHB returns to action Thursday, December 29
th in a 5:00 p.m. contest against Piedmont University in Belton.
