BELTON, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team edged Belhaven University 61-53 on Thursday evening in Belton. The Cru improved to 21-2 overall and 18-0 in league play while the Blazers fell to 10-9 on the season and 5-9 in ASC play.
The Blazers claimed the first basket straight off the jump ball. At the 6:25 mark, Belhaven went on a 13-point run to expand their lead to nine. In the final three minutes of first quarter play,
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen led the Cru claiming five points to end the quarter down 17-9. UMHB entered the second quarter with a six-point run followed by a four-point run to bring the contest within two at the 4:03 mark. With two minutes remaining,
Cheyanne Bonilla used a steal and layup to knot-up the match 24-24 to go into the half.
The third quarter proceeded in back-and-forth play. The Blazers claimed a lead as big as four, but in the final 20 seconds,
Kenidi White used a basket to tie it up 36-36. UMHB came into the final quarter strong using a nine-point run to take a seven-point advantage. At the 5:17 mark, the Cru went on an 8-1 run led by Kollmorgen with six of the points, bringing the gap to ten. Belhaven tried to fight back, but UMHB kept pace claiming the 61-53 victory.
Arieona Rosborough and Kollmorgen led UMHB in scoring with 15 points each. The Cru offense was anchored by Rosborough and
Alexia Martin with four assists each. UMHB totaled 33 rebounds, having four players each with five. The Cru caused 27 turnovers for the Blazers including 12 steals.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, February 19
th in a 1:00 P.M. contest against East Texas Baptist University in Belton.
