MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 60-51 win over Belhaven University the quarterfinal round of the 2022 American Southwest Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 22-3 on the season while the Blazers end their season at 10-11.
The first quarter of action played scoreless until the 7:26 mark when
Bethany McLeod hit a jumper off an
Arieona Rosborough assist. Belhaven evened the contest at 6:30 before
Aja Holmes hit a layup at 5:31 to give UMHB a lead. The Cru held advantage until Shomaria Overton hit a three-pointer to give the Blazers a two-point lead with 44 seconds left. Rosborough evened the contest with a layup at 00:25 before McLeod opened the second quarter with a three-pointer. The Cru followed that with a seven-point run, holding a double-digit lead with three minutes left in the half. Belhaven held the Cru to just one point in the final minutes of action, cutting UMHB's lead to 30-26 after two quarters.
UMHB outscored the Blazers 14-11 in the third quarter. The Cru shot 42.9 percent with six field goals and two free throws. UMHB did not trail again, finishing off a 60-51 win over Belhaven.
Ashley Faux led the Cru with nine points while
Bethany McLeod and
Aja Holmes each added eight. UMHB shot 39.3 percent in the contest with 32 points from the bench and 17 points off turnovers. Holmes was the Cru's rebound leader with six, followed by
Catherine Kaiser and
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen with five each. McLeod and Hinton led the Cru with three assists each while McLeod and Kollmorgen both added three steals. UMHB totaled 45 rebounds, 13 assists and four blocks in the contest.
UMHB advances to the semifinal round of the tournament and will face UT Dallas in a 5 p.m. contest on Friday, February 25
