BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team edged LeTourneau University 79–77 with a buzzer beater behind the arc on Monday evening in Longview. The Cru improved to 17-2 on the season and 12-2 in the American Southwest Conference while the Yellowjackets fell to 16-3 overall and 11-3 in league play.
The contest proceeded in even play until LeTourneau went on a 12-point run, jumping to an 11-point lead at the 14:34 mark. A three-pointer by
Ty Prince with seven minutes remaining sparked a ten-point run for UMHB, tying the game up 25-25 at the 5:13 mark. The half continued in back-and-forth play, ending with the Yellowjackets up 37-34.
The Yellowjackets used a four-point run to create distance early in the second half and were up as much as seven at the 9:23 mark. The Cru knotted the contest back up 66-66 with five minutes left on the clock, led by
Luke Feely with six of the points. After LeTourneau used a free throw to expand their lead back to six,
Kyle Wright hit a three-pointer at the 1:27 mark to spark momentum for UMHB. The Cru capitalized on free baskets and a layup from
Josiah Johnson to bring the game within one with 19 seconds left on the clock. The Yellowjackets were brought to the free throw line at the 0:10 mark. Prince rebounded the missed free throw and put it in the hands of Johnson for the buzzer beater behind the arc to claim the 79-77 victory.
Johnson led UMHB with 31 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, claiming a double-double. Prince and Feely both had double digits with 17 and 16 points respectively. Prince also played a big part for the Cru defensively with three steals, a block and seven rebounds.
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, February 10th in contest against Howard Payne University in Brownwood.
