Baseball defeats Austin College to close series

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team run ruled Austin College 19-7 Sunday afternoon in Belton. The win improves the Cru's overall record to 8-6 and drops the Roos to 4-10 on the season.
 
Austin College scored their first run of the series in the top of the first inning. Ryan Farmer responded for UMHB, hitting a home run over the left field wall for a 2-1 UMHB lead. Kaden deBerardinis and Drake Herrera both hit RBI single to extend the lead in the bottom of the second inning before Malek Bolin slammed a three-RBI home run for a 7-1 Cru advantage. Austin College put up four runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the gap to two.
 
UMHB responded with a single-run in the bottom of the fourth before exploding for eight runs in the fifth inning. Ryan Farmer scored on an RBI from Hayden Guerin before deBerardinis hit in Sam Muniga with a single to right field. Herrera and Farmer scored on back-to-back bases-loaded walks before Rhett Grosz cleared the bases with a grand slam.  Garrett Gregory scored the final run of the inning on a single from Blake Harmon. UMHB totaled eight runs on five hits with one error in the inning.
 
The Roos added two more runs in the top of the sixth before UMHB responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Herrera scored on an RBI single from Guerin before Farmer reached home on a sac fly from Warren Sammons. Hayden Guerin scored the final run for the Cru on an error, giving UMHB the 19-7 win.
 
Rhett Grosz led UMHB with three hits and four RBIs while four Crusaders added two hits each. The Cru totaled 16 hits on 19 runs with one error. The Roos totaled eight hits on seven runs with three errors. Nicklas Fenner started on the mound for UMHB, pitching four innings. Trevor Ripke, Russell Vadala and Keegan Symons each made appearances on the mound for one inning.
 
UMHB returns to action on Tuesday, March 15th in a 1 p.m. single-game at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
