BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a doubleheader with No.4 Belhaven University Friday evening in Belton. The Cru moved to 18-6 on the season and 11-3 in the American Southwest Conference while the Blazers now have an overall record of 19-3 and 12-2 in league play.
UMHB opened game one with a quick three-up, three-down in the top of the first inning. The Cru were the first on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from
Lindsey Polleschultz to score
Bailey Eggleston. The Blazers scored the equalizer in the top of the third when McNeer scored on an error. UMHB continued scoring in the bottom of the fifth when
Julia Crofut singled to bring
Elissa Elliott and
Lexi Harris home, creating a 3-1 lead.
The Cru brought in five more runs in the sixth inning starting with a two RBI double by
Elisabeth Paul to score Harris and Polleschultz. UMHB continued with Elliott scoring off a ground out from Crofut followed by a sacrifice fly by
Blakely Niles to score
Kaitlin Powers. The Cru finished the sixth inning with a homerun by
Izzy Gutierrez to expand their lead to 8-1. Belhaven scored their final run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single. UMHB claimed the 8-2 victory.
Bayleigh Grogan pitched all seven innings for UMHB allowing two runs on six hits. Carruth took the loss for the Blazers allowing seven runs on eight hits. The Cru totaled nine hits led by Harris and Elliott with two each. Belhaven had six hits led by Blackwell with two.
The Cru opened up game two scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a homerun from Crofut. The Blazers answered in the top of the third with an RBI single followed by a three-run homerun to take a 4-1 lead. Belhaven continued scoring in the fifth inning with a two-run homerun. UMHB responded in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the gap to three with an RBI single by Gutierrez to bring in Eggleston and
Taylor Holman. The Blazers expanded their lead in the seventh inning with a third homerun followed by two runs scored on an error. Belhaven secured their victory with a final RBI single to take the 10-3 win.
Rachel Williams pitched four innings for the Cru, allowing seven runs on six hits.
Grason Long and
Kami Flores also made appearances in the circle for UMHB. Baucom started in the circle for the Blazers pitching four innings, allowing three runs on three hits. The Cru totaled four hits with Gutierrez and Crofut each claiming an RBI. The Blazers totaled nine hits with three players each claiming two.
