MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split its Friday doubleheader at No. 6 East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, falling 5-0 to the Tigers before taking the second game 3-0. UMHB moved to 19-8 on the season while the Tigers went to 21-7.
East Texas Baptist took a first-game lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single from Amber Thibodeau and an RBI double from Courtney White. The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the sixth inning to secure the 5-0 win over the Cru.
Izzy Gutierrez led the Cru with two hits while
Julia Crofut and
Tatum Stover each recorded one.
Bayleigh Grogan took the loss for UMHB, throwing four innings with six hits and four runs allowed. UMHB totaled four hits and two errors while the Tigers had five runs on nine hits with no errors.
Gutierrez opened the second game with an RBI single in the third inning, scoring
Milly Cesare and
Kennedy Kalka for a 2-0 Cru lead.
Bailey Eggleston drove in another run for the Cru in the fourth, hitting in
Allyse Castillo with a single to left field.
Rachel Williams pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 3-0 win. Williams held the Tigers scoreless for just the second time this season, facing 30 batters with seven hits allowed. Williams struck out three in the win. Eggleston and
Tatum Stover led the Cru with two hits each while three different Crusaders combined for runs. UMHB totaled three runs on five hits with no errors while the Tigers had seven hits and one error.
UMHB closes the series on Saturday, April 2
nd in a noon single game against the Tigers.
