BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team rallied in the final minutes of action to earn a 95-92 win over Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 13-4 on the season and 8-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in league play.
UMHB opened the game on a 6-0 run and led by as many as 11 points in the first five minutes of action. Concordia Texas bought back, tying the game at the 12:33 mark and taking their first lead of the game at 12:10. The Tornados led by as many as seven points before UMHB tied the game again at 28.
Ty Prince hit a three-pointer to put the Cru on top again before the Tornados responded with the game-tying basket at 2:04. Concordia Texas outscored the Cru 8-4 from that point, going into halftime up 44-40.
Prince led the Cru with 14 points in the half while
Kyle Wright added eight. UMHB shot 45.9 percent from the field, adding four three-pointers and two foul shots. The Cru scored 24 points in the paint with 11 off turnovers and eight from the bench.
Concordia Texas led until 1:30 when
Ty Prince hit a shot to even the contest at 89. Adolfo Martinez made a three-pointer at 1:11 to put the Tornados ahead again but a pair of Johnson free throws at 00:43 pulled the game within one.
Josiah Johnson stole the ball at 00:36 and UMHB's offense drove down the court.
Luke Feely scored a contested layup at 00:20 and made the ensuing foul shot to put UMHB up 94-92. Feely rebounded a missed Tornado shot at 00:05 to give UMHB the ball back with 00:04 left to play.
Kyle Wright made a foul shot with 00:04 left to put UMHB up by three. Concordia Texas's last-second basket bounced off the backboard, giving UMHB the 95-92 win.
Prince led the Cru with 25 points, followed by
Josiah Johnson with 18 and
Kyle Wright with 16. UMHB shot 54.4 percent from the field with 37 field goals. Prince led UMHB in points rebounds (nine) and assists (seven) while Johnson had a team-high four assists. UMHB forced the Tornados into 15 turnovers, scoring 20 points off those turnovers.
Josiah Johnson also broke UMHB's career scoring record with his 1,696
th point. He passed Demarius Cress' previous record of 1,695.
Ty Prince also had a memorable night, scoring his 1,000
th point as a Crusader.
UMHB closes out the five-game home stand next week. The Cru hosts East Texas Baptist University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 26
th before taking on LeTourneau on Saturday, January 28
th at 3:00 p.m.
