BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned 40+ point win over LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improved to a 14-5 overall record and 9-3 in American Southwest Conference play while the YellowJackets fell to 6-14 on the season and 2-11 in league action.
UMHB was the first on the board with an
Ashley Faux three-pointer. The YellowJackets brought the contest within three at the 5:16 mark. Back-to-back three-pointers by
Catalina Cortez sparked a 16-point run by the Cru to end the first quarter up 29-9.
Second quarter action remained scoreless until
Kenna Gibson hit a jumper at the 8:11 mark. The YellowJackets responded with a second chance basket before going on a scoring drought, allowing UMHB to create a lead as big as 35. The YellowJackets recorded just four more points in the quarter and the Cru went into the half with a 54-15 advantage.
UMHB shot 40 percent in first half action, led by Faux with 12 points. UMHB capitalized on LeTourneau's 19 first half turnovers, scoring 26 points off of them. The Cru totaled nine steals led by
Payton Hicks with three.
The YellowJackets fought back in the second half, going on a seven-point run in the third minute. LeTourneau was able to cut the gap down to 32, but the Cru used a final 10-2 run to end the third quarter with a 42-point advantage. The fourth quarter proceed in back-and-forth play, but the Cru held on outscoring the YellowJackets 13-11, to claim an 89-45 victory.
Arieona Rosborough led the Cru with 15 points while Faux added 12.
Aja Holmes led UMHB under the basket with seven rebounds followed by Rosborough,
Jaycie Brisco and
Kirsten Zaruba who each added five to the Cru's 58 total. UMHB recorded 16 steals and four blocks on the night.
The Cru returns to action Thursday, February 2
nd in a 5:30 p.m. contest against Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
