Football keeps streak alive with win over Sul Ross State

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team capped a 22-game unbeaten streak against Sul Ross State University with a 37-13 win over the Lobos Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB ended American Southwest Conference play against the Lobos with a 23-0 record. The Cru improved to 3-3 on the season with the win while the Lobos also evened at 3-3.  
 
UMHB's defense opened the game with a safety when a bad snap on fourth-and-13 went into the end zone for a Cru lead. Sul Ross State responded with a 70-yard drive, capped by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Cyrin Myles. UMHB's offense responded on the next drive, going 44 yards on seven plays. Kenneth Cormier, Jr. rushed for 35 yards in the drive before Isaac Phe found Christopher Gacayan for a 10-yard score.
 
Sul Ross State opened the second quarter with a 24-yard field goal to cut the gap to just one point. The Cru drove 75 yards on the next series with Phe finding Romello Cook in the back of the end zone for another touchdown. The Lobos got the ball back with 2:56 in the half and drove 53 yards for a first-and-10 at the Cru 28-yardline. SRSU picked up six yards on a completion to Rod Hudson II before a pass breakup from Titus Dunk and a Trey Witcher sack forced them into a fourth-and-five at the 23. Sul Ross State kicked a field goal as time expired, sending the contest into halftime at 16-13.
 
Johnny Smith-Rider opened the third quarter with a pick six, intercepting a Myles pass and returning it 41 yards for the score. The Lobos drove into the red zone on their next possession but came away scoreless after Trystin Brown blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt.
 
UMHB opened the fourth quarter up 23-13. The Cru defense forced SRSU into a fourth-and-nine at the 18-yardline on their opening drive. Solomon Hopkins capped the stand with a blocked punt and recovery in the end zone for another touchdown. Phe opened the Cru's first offensive possession of the quarter with a 42-yard pass to Christopher Gacayan before Ozias Wright broke free for 20 yards and his first score of the game. UMHB's defense held the Lobos scoreless for the duration, earning the 37-13 victory.
 
Phe threw 10 completions for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Wright led the rushing game with 67 yards and a score. Gacayan caught four passes for 54 yards and a touchdown while Cook, Jerry Day, Jr. and Caleb Durham-Honer each added two receptions. UMHB's offense totaled 298 yards in the game with 146 on the ground and 152 in the air.
 
Durand Hill led the Cru defense with 10 total tackles while Trace Holmes and Omari Frazier each added eight. Dorian Pittman totaled six tackles with one tackle for loss and one sack while Smith-Rider had one interception, one tackle for loss and two pass breakups.
 
UMHB goes back on the road for a pair of American Southwest Conference matches to close October. The Cru faces Austin College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 21st before taking on Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, October 28th. Sul Ross State does not count in ASC standings this season as they reclassify to Division II.
