BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 99-86 win in the 2023-24 home opener over Schreiner University Monday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 4-1 on the season while the Mountaineers fell to 1-4 overall.
The first quarter played back-and-forth until Schreiner scored eight unanswered points to take a seven-point lead. The Mountaineers pulled within five with a pair of foul shots before another jumper from
Alexis Carmosino put the Cru up by seven again with 4:45 to play in the frame. The Cru led by as many as 11 points in the quarter, going into the second up 23-18.
Schreiner fought back in the second quarter, tying the score at 35 with 3:02 remaining but a three-pointer from
Ashley Faux kept the Cru on the high ground. The Moutaineers pulled back within one but a trio of consecutive three-pointers from the Cru gave UMHB a nine-point lead with 57 seconds to play. Schreiner scored just three more points in the frame as UMHB went into the half up 47-40.
Lauren Baker led the Cru with nine first-half points while
Arieona Rosborough added seven.
Ashley Faux recorded a team-high 10 boards and five assists in the half.
UMHB took a 10-point lead in the third quarter off a jumper from
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen and extended that to 12 points with a field goal from
Lauren Baker. Schreiner cut the gap to four points with 3:01 to play but the Cru held on, going into the fourth quarter up by 11. UMHB cruised from there, leading by double-digits through the final 2:35 of action to earn the 99-86 win.
Arieona Rosborough led the Cru with 22 points while
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen added 21.
Lauren Baker and
Alexis Carmosino also put up double-digit performances as UMHB shot 37.8 percent in the contest. Kollmorgen recorded a double-double in the contest with 10 rebounds while
Ashley Faux led the Cru with 13 boards. Faux was also the Cru's leader with six assists and five steals in the match.
UMHB scored 34 second-chance points with 19 fast break points and 25 points off turnovers. The Cru outrebounded Schreiner 56-26 in the contest, limiting the Mountaineers to just 25 field goals and seven shots from beyond the arc.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, December 2
nd in a 1 p.m. match at Concordia University Texas in Austin.
