NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used a late fourth-quarter rally to earn a three-point win over Millsaps College Wednesday afternoon in New York City. The win improved the Cru to 11-1 on the season while the Majors fell to 10-2.
Millsaps jumped to an early 6-2 lead but
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen responded with a step-back jumper to cut that gap to four.
Remi Adeleke made a layup on the Cru's next possession to knot the game at six with 5:34 to play in the first quarter.
Lauren Baker gave the Cru its first lead off a layup with 5:02 left before the Majors evened it again off a pair of foul shots from Haley Franklin. Millsaps followed that with a seven-point run but back-to-back jumpers from Baker and
Alexis Carmosino cut that gap to three with 1:50 to play. The Majors pulled away again but UMHB continued to fight back, going into the second half at a 19-16 deficit.
Emily Adams hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter, giving Millsaps a six-point lead. The Majors led by as many as 10 points early in the frame and took a 12-point lead with 3:43 to play in the first half.
Arieona Rosborough hit a jumper to cut the gap to 10 before
Ashley Faux made a three-pointer off a pass from Carmosino for a seven-point margin. Both teams continued to exchange baskets with the Majors taking a 38-31 lead into halftime.
Millsaps led by double-digits for the majority of the third quarter.
Alexis Carmosino hit a three-pointer at the 3:22 mark to cut the gap to 10 before
Arieona Rosborough made a jumper at 2:19 to pull the game within single digits. Carmosino made a pair of baskets cut the margin to four points before Rosborough closed it with four made foul shots, sending the game into the fourth quarter knotted at 50.
The Cru took another lead at the opening of the fourth frame off a jumper from Carmosino. Millsaps responded with a three-pointer at the 8:20 mark. The Majors led until 6:03 when Rosborough hit a three-pointer to tie the contest at 57. Millsaps took another lead right after and held the margin until the 3:40 mark when Rosborough made a pair of foul shots to tie the game again at 63. The quarter played scoreless from there until the 56-second mark when
Remi Adeleke made a free-throw for a one-point Cru lead. Rosborough followed that with two more foul shots before Millsaps hit a layup to cut the margin to just one point. Rosborough responded at the foul line once again, sealing the Cru's 68-65 win.
Rosborough led the Cru with 18 points, going 11-for-12 from the foul line.
Alexis Carmosino added 12 points for the Cru while
Remi Adeleke put up 10.
Jaycie Brisco and Rosborough both anchored the offense with six assists.
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen was the Cru's leading rebounder with 10, followed by Carmosino and Adeleke with seven each. Kollmorgen also added four steals while Brisco put up a team-high two blocks.
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, January 4
th in a 5:30 p.m. match against University of the Ozarks at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton. The Cru will also face UT Dallas at home on Saturday, January 6
th.
