Women’s Basketball soars past the War Hawks

ABILENE, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a convincing win over McMurry University Thursday in Abilene, beating the War Hawks 73-62. The win improved the Cru to 18-6 on the season and 13-4 in American Southwest Conference action while McMurry fell to 11-12 on the season and 5-12 in league play.  
 
Arieona Rosborough opened the first quarter with eight consecutive points as UMHB took an 8-6 lead on the War Hawks. Rosborough followed that with an assist to Ashley Faux for a four-point advantage. McCall Hampton then went on a five-point run of her own to put the Cru up by eight with 2:31 to play in the first frame. UMHB closed out the first quarter with an 18-13 advantage, led by Rosborough with eight points and Hampton with six.
 
The War Hawks opened the second quarter with a layup before UMHB went on a 7-0 run highlighted by Lauren Baker's five points. McMurry cut the lead to six but could not stop UMHB's offense. The Cru put up 17 second-quarter points going into halftime with a 35-27 lead.
 
UMHB used a 6-0 run to gain a double-digit lead on the War Hawks with 6:30 left in the third quarter. The Cru held on to a double-digit advantage through the quarter, leading by as many as 15 points in the frame. UMHB extended the lead to 21 early in the fourth but the War Hawks fought back to a single-digit deficit. Rosborough hit back-to-back foul shots to go back up by double digits then added two more with 35 seconds left to take a 12-point advantage. The War Hawks put three more points on the board but UMHB held on, securing the 73-62 win.
 
Rosborough led the Cru with 16 points, followed by McCall Hampton with nine. Lauren Baker and Catalina Cortez each added eight points in the contest as 12 different Crusaders added to the point total. Rosbourgh's 10 rebounds also gave her a double-double. She also led the team with three assists and five steals. UMHB shot 33.3 percent in the contest and 20.8 percent from the three-point line. The Cru defense did not allow the War Hawks advantage in the game, surrendering just 23 field goals.  
 
UMHB closes out the regular season in a 1 p.m. game at Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, February 18th. The Cru will advance to American Southwest Conference tournament play next week. Visit cruathletics.com for more information about the postseason.
