GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team defeated Southwestern University 5-3 Thursday night in Georgetown. The Cru improved to 2-1 on the season while the Pirates fell to 2-9 overall.
UMHB was first on the board with a score from
Lexi Harris off an RBI single by
Izzy Gutierrez in the top of the first inning. The contest remained scoreless for the next two innings until Harris tacked on another run on an RBI from Gutierrez. The Cru added one more score in the fourth inning with a run by
Lindsey Polleschultz on a
Taylor Holman RBI single to left field.
UMHB extended their cushion to five in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run RBI double from
Bryton Wright to bring in
Kaitlin Powers and Polleschultz. The Pirates claimed their first score in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI ground out by Yanta to score Collier. Southwestern tacked on two more runs before the Cru caught a fly out to center field to secure the 5-3 victory.
Kami Flores pitched all seven innings for UMHB, allowing just six hits and three runs. Flores recorded her second win of the season and added four strikeouts. The Cru out-hit the Pirates 13-6, led by Harris with three hits.
UMHB returns to action Saturday, February 25
th with an 11 a.m. doubleheader against Trinity University in Belton.
