Baseball falls to Texas Lutheran

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team fell victim to a ninth-inning rally from Texas Lutheran University Tuesday evening in Belton, falling to the Bulldogs 9-5. The loss dropped the Cru to 0-4 on the season while the Bulldogs moved to 4-7.
 
Bryce Farlander made his collegiate debut on the mound for the Cru, allowing just one hit in his first frame as a Crusader. Drake Herrera opened the bottom of the first inning with a hit-by-pitch and came around to score two batters later on an RBI double from Hunter Jones. UMHB tacked on two more single-run innings in the second and third innings for a 3-0 lead. Ryan Farmer scored in the bottom of the second off an RBI single from Sam Muniga before Kaden deBerardinis added a run off another Hunter Jones RBI.
 
deBerardinis drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Muniga and Elijah Rodriguez to put UMHB up by five. Texas Lutheran got on the board in the fifth inning off RBI single from Holden Phillippus before Niko Garcia hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to even the contest at five runs each.
 
The tie held until the top of the ninth inning when Holden Philippus hit a sacrifice fly to score Payton Dahl and give the Bulldogs a one-run lead. Tyler Post followed that with a three-run home run to put the Bulldogs on top by four runs. UMHB was unable to respond in the bottom of the ninth, surrendering the 9-5 win to the Bulldogs.
 
Jones and Muniga led the Cru with two hits each while four other Crusaders each added one. UMHB totaled five runs on eight hits with no errors while the Bulldogs had nine runs on 11 hits with one error.
 
Farlander gave up just four hits and one run in his debut, striking out five batters with just one walk. Zach Carroll took the loss for the Cru, pitching 2.2 innings with one hit and two runs allowed.
 
UMHB returns to action this weekend against Howard Payne University. The three-game series will open on Friday, March 3rd in a 6 p.m. contest before closing out with a noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 4th.
