RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team hit the 20-win mark today with a pair of wins at the University of Texas at Dallas. The Cru earned a 2-1 and 7-4 win over the Comets to move to 20-9 on the season.
Kami Flores opened the first game with a pair of perfect innings in the circle for the Cru.
Izzy Gutierrez put the Cru on the board in the third with a two-run homerun, scoring
Blane Simmons on the play. The Comets responded in the bottom of the same inning with a score on a fielder's choice. UMHB held the Comets to just one run through the final four innings, including two more hitless frames from Flores to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Flores pitched all seven innings for the Cru, recording her 11th win of the season. She allowed just one hit with six strikeouts. Emilie Hoelscher took the loss for the Comets allowing two runs on six hits. Gutierrez led UMHB with three hits and two RBI followed by
Julia Crofut with two hits. UMHB totaled two runs on six hits with one error while the Comets had one run on one hit with no errors.
The Cru struck early with a four-run first inning in the second game. Crofut doubled down the left field line to score Gutierrez and Harris followed by a
Bryton Wright home run that also scored Crofut. UMHB added one more run in the second with a sacrifice fly from Gutierrez to score
Kyler Sanders. The Cru put up another single-run frame in the third with an RBI single from
Elissa Elliott before Gutierrez hit her second home run of the day in the fourth for a 7-0 UMHB lead. The Comets cut the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more in the seventh but ultimately fell 7-4 to the Cru.
Gutierrez, Harris and Eggleston led the Cru with two hits each while Gutierrez also led the Cru with two runs. Gutierrez, Crofut and Wright all led with two RBI each as UMHB totaled seven RBI.
Grason Long pitched four innings in the circle, allowing three hits with six strikeouts in the outing.
Hannah McCallister threw 2.2 innings in relief, allowing four runs while
Danielle Gillean pitched the final out for UMHB. UMHB totaled seven runs with 10 hits and two errors while the Comets had four runs on eight hits with two hits.
The Cru returns to action in a noon single-game on Saturday, April 15th to close out the three-game series against UT Dallas.
