Baseball falls to University of the Ozarks in extras

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dropped an extra-inning decision to University of the Ozarks Saturday afternoon in Clarksville, The Cru fought hard, tying the equalizer three times in late frames before falling in the 11th inning.
 
UMHB jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the second frame Elijah Rodriguez singled to score Carson Hagan before Hunter Jones reached home on a sacrifice fly from Sam Muniga. Rodriguez advanced two bases on a pair of wild pitches and scored on an RBI from Drake Herrera on the next at-bat. Tyler Betts then walked to get on base and advanced to third on a single from Kaden deBerardinis, stealing home for the Cru's fourth run of the game.  
 
Rhett Grosz scored another run for the Cru in the third, reaching on an RBI from Hagan. The Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the third to cut the margin but UMHB extended it to six runs with back-to-back home runs from Hayden Guerin and Rhett Grosz in the fourth.
 
Ozarks answered back in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits with one error to take a 10-8 lead. The Cru evened the game in the top of the next frame on a Hayden Guerin home run and a Carson Hagan run off an error. The Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the seventh frame off an RBI double before UMHB answered again with a Hunter Jones run in the eighth.
 
The Eagles again scored the go-ahead in the bottom of the right but UMHB answered again, scoring Tyler Betts off an RBI single from Hayden Guerin to tie the game at 12-12. Nicklas Fenner allowed just one runner in the bottom of the ninth and threw a perfect frame in the 10th to keep UMHB in the contest. The Cru had a pair of runners in scoring position in the 11th but the Eagles got out of the jam and scored the final go-ahead run in their offensive outing. Brooks Boshers singled then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a double to end the game at 13-12 Ozarks.
 
Four Crusaders led the Cru with three hits each while Guerin had a team-high four RBI and five Crusaders each scored a team-high two runs. Rahul Champaneri pitched 4.2 innings for the Cru, surrendering seven hits and six earned runs with one strikeout. James McGlumphy took the mound after Champaneri, giving up two runs and three hits in 1.1 frames while Nicklas Fenner took the loss, going 4.1 innings with six hits and three runs allowed.
 
The Cru returns to action next week with four games at home. UMHB will face Trinity University on Tuesday, April 25th before hosting Sul Ross State University in the final conference series April 28th – 29th.
