BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team completed a three-game sweep of University of the Ozarks in an 8-0 victory Saturday in Belton. The Cru outscored the Eagles 27-1 in the series to advance to 24-9 on the season.
Kami Flores opened the game with a shutout inning in the first before the Cru took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of that frame.
Lexi Harris got on base with a hit-by-pitch before advancing to second on a single from
Lindsey Polleschultz. Harris scored on the next at-bat off an RBI single from
Izzy Gutierrez before
Taylor Holman hit in Polleschultz and Gutierrez with her third home run of the series.
Blane Simmons added another first-inning score, reaching on a wild pitch before
Elissa Elliott scored on an RBI from
Allyse Castillo for a six-run margin.
Elissa Elliott scored another run for the Cru in the second inning off an RBI single from
Blakely Niles for a 7-0 lead.
Grason Long replaced Flores after a pair of batters in the third, throwing back-to-back strikeouts to again strand the Eagles' runner and preserve the Cru's shutout. Long saw her second historic moment of the series in the fourth inning, throwing her 100
th strikeout of the season amidst a perfect fourth frame. Long pitched another shutout in the fifth before
Allyse Castillo sealed the win in the fifth, scoring
Kaitlin Powers with an RBI single.
Harris, Holman and Elliott led the Cru with two hits each while Holman led with three RBI and Elliott had a team-high two runs. UMHB totaled eight runs on 12 hits with no errors while the Eagles had 0 runs on three hits with two errors.
Kami Flores threw 2.1 innings with three hits allowed and just two strikeouts. Long threw in relief, throwing 2.2 innings with six strikeouts and just one base-runner allowed.
UMHB returns to action next weekend in a three-game series at Sul Ross State University before closing the regular season at home May 5
th – 6
th against Concordia University Texas.
