Abby Spurgin joins women’s basketball coaching staff

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor announced the addition of Abby Spurgin to the women's basketball coaching staff on Thursday.

Spurgin joined the Cru after a successful collegiate playing career at both West Texas A&M University (2017-21) and Hawai'i Pacific University (2022-23). Spurgin was a decorated athlete at WTAMU, earning Most Valuable Player (Lonestar Conference Tournament), Dave Campbell's Texas Basketball All-Division II Team, Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), All-South Central Region and First Team All-Lonestar Conference.

"I am thrilled to be back in a Christian community and at a Christ-centered university," Spurgin said. "I've had the opportunity to play at different colleges and learn what is needed to compete for championships. I am blessed that Coach Katie Novak-Lenoir is giving me the opportunity to work with her in developing student-athletes. I look forward to transforming the lives of these athletes no only on the court but also in their Christian faith."

Following her career at West Texas A&M, Spurgin played for Coach Novak-Lenoir at Hawai'i Pacific University. At HPU, Spurgin was named PacWest Player of the Year and PacWest Newcomer of the Year. She was also a First Team All-PacWest, D2CCCA All-America and WBCA All-America selection.

"I am thrilled to have Abby join the Cru," Novak-Lenoir said. "She has reached elite levels of achievement through her basketball career, both from an individual and team perspective. Abby has a great basketball mind and knows the basketball philosophy we will be teaching inside and out. She is a fantastic addition to our team and I know our players will thrive under her guidance and leadership."

Spurgin is a native of Fredericksburg. She was a TABC All-State selection and District MVP at Fredericksburg High School, where she also lettered in volleyball and track.

"Not only is Abby a great fit on the court, she is a strong Christian and high-character individual who will be a great sounding board for our student-athletes," Novak-Lenoir added. "I am looking forward to what Abby will do to help grow our program both on and off the basketball court."
