BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor announced the addition of Uriah Hunter to the men's basketball coaching staff on Thursday.
Hunter comes to UMHB after three seasons as the head coach for the Fort (Hood) Cavazos men's and women's basketball teams. Hunter helped the men's team to a National Military Basketball Championship in 2022. While stationed at Fort Cavazos, Hunter also served as assistant coach for the All-Army Women's Basketball Team, leading that team, composed of the best players in the U.S. Army, to a gold medal at the US Armed Forces Basketball Championship in 2022. Hunter began his coaching career with the USAG Area IV men's basketball team in Daegu, South Korea.
"I am honored to serve in a Christian community and humbled for the opportunity Coach Clif Carroll and the UMHB has given me," Hunter said. "I understand the expectations at UMHB are high and I look forward to developing our student-athletes on and off the court. My goal is to be of immediate value and help the program win a national championship."
In addition to his on-court success, Hunter has guided 45 soldier-athletes to Military Volunteer Service Medals and Army Achievement medals for community service. He has coached eight U.S. Armed Forces Gold Medal winners, three professional athletes, 22 former collegiate athletes (11 from Division I universities) and was named Soldiers to Sidelines Coach of the Month (July 2022).
"We are extremely excited to welcome Uriah to our staff," said Head Coach Clif Carroll. "He will bring a unique perspective to our program with his distinguished 20-year career in the Army. Uriah has been incredibly impressive in every interaction so far and I look forward to continuing to build our program with him."
Hunter spent 20 years serving on active duty in the United States Army as a Logistics Warrant Officer, retiring in June 2023. He served various overseas tours in Qatar, Kuwait and South Korea with combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan (twice). Hunter is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and five Meritorious Service Medals. He earned an undergraduate degree in organizational management from Ashford University in 2015. Hunter and his wife Melanie, an active-duty Warrant Officer, have been married for 18 years.
