ABILENE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to win its 14
th consecutive game Thursday in a 93-89 overtime win at No. 10/14 Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. The win improved the Cru to 14-1 on the season and 7-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cowgirls fell to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.
UMHB opened the game with a 5-2 lead before the Cowgirls went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-5 margin with 5:26 to play in the first quarter. The Cru fought back with back-to-back layups from
Meagan Johnson and
Arieona Rosborough before Paris Kiser hit a three-pointer for HSU to extend the lead to 15-9.
Lauren Baker answered for the Cru, hitting a three-pointer at the 3:05 mark to cut the gap to three points before
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen made a layup to pull the Cru within one. Both teams scored a pair of points in the final 1:18 of action to end the first quarter with a 17-16 HSU lead.
Meagan Johnson opened the second quarter with a jumper to put UMHB back on top. The Cru held the margin until Samantha Tatum hit a three-pointer at 8:07 to retake the high ground for the Cowgirls. HSU pulled away with a pair of shots beyond the arc to take a five-point lead, going ahead by as many as nine points. UMHB fought back, pulling with seven for a 37-30 HSU lead at halftime.
The Cowgirls maintained the lead in the third quarter, leading by as many as 15 points in the frame. UMHB did not go away, pulling the game within two possessions with 8:02 left in the fourth quarter. The game continued in a single-digit deficit with UMHB continuing to chip away at the gap.
Meagan Johnson jump started a nine-point run at 3:19 with the Cru taking a lead off an
Alexis Carmosino three-pointer at 1:57 and extending the gap to three off a pair of foul shots from Rosborough. The Cowgirls fought back and were able to even the contest at 76 with eight seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
Hardin-Simmons struck first in overtime with a layup from Parris Parmer but
Lauren Baker mirrored her at 4:10 to tie the game again. Baker added a foul shot before Rosborough netted a jumper to give the Cru an 81-78 lead. Baker followed that with a layup for an 83-78 margin. The Cowgirls evened the game again at 83 with 1:22 left in the extra period but
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a layup to put the Cru back on top with 47 seconds to play. Rosborough followed that with a pair of foul shots as UMHB held the high ground through the rest of the frame, earning the 93-89 win.
Arieona Rosborough led the Cru with 30 points, making 13 foul shots and eight field goals. Rosborough added team-highs in rebounds (14), assists (seven) and steals (three).
Alexis Carmosino added 19 points with nine boards while
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen and
Meagan Johnson also put up double-digit scoring performances. Kollmorgen also had a double-double with 12 boards while Carmosino and
Ashley Faux both added nine.
UMHB shot 48.6 percent in the contest, scoring 30 fast break points and 21 points off the bench. The Cru added 52 points in the paint and 15 points off turnovers. UMHB outrebounded the Cowgirls 52-35 in the matchup, forcing HSU into 16 turnovers with seven total steals and seven blocks.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, January 13
th in a 1 p.m. contest at McMurry University in Abilene.
