ABILENE, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team hit the century mark in a 108-96 road win over McMurry University Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The Cru improved to 15-1 on the season and 8-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the War Hawks fell to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in ASC play.
The War Hawks opened the contest with a 17-5 run before an
Arieona Rosborough free throw sparked a four-point run for the Cru. Play continued even until UMHB capitalized on free throws going on a 9-3 run. The War Hawks added two more free throws in the final seconds to close the quarter ahead 28-22.
UMHB started the second quarter with five unanswered points followed by a
Katelen Brooks three-pointer to tie the contest 30-30. The play went basket-for-basket until the 1:59 mark when Rosborough and
Jaycie Brisco hit five foul shots to take the first lead for the Cru 47-46. UMHB continued on scoring six more to close the half ahead 53-48.
Rosborough led the Cru through the first half with 15 points, going 10-12 from the free throw line.
Josie Bruder also added nine points and six rebounds, while
Lauren Baker tacked on seven points.
McMurry was first to score in the third quarter, but Rosborough responded with six unanswered points to bring the lead to eight. UMHB continued on an eight-point run, led by
Kaitlyn Kollmorgen with six to go ahead 13 at the 3:21 mark. The War Hawks cut the gap back to seven with a 9-3 run, but the Cru scored a final layup to end the quarter ahead 81-72.
UMHB held their dominance in the fourth with five three-pointers in the first five minutes to extend the margin 98-82, led by Baker with three. The Cru kept pushing forward with a 10-6 run at the 2:31 mark. The War Hawks tried to fight back with a duo of shots behind the arc and a layup, but could not overcome the deficit, giving UMHB the 108-96 win.
Rosborough led the Cru, breaking the UMHB record for points in a game with 36 total points. Baker also set her new career-high with 21 points on the day. Rosborough and Bruder led the Cru with nine boards each, while Rosborough tacked on four steals.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, January 20
th in a 1:00 p.m. contest against Concordia University Texas in Belton.
