BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 90-74 win over Sul Ross State University Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 18-2 on the season while the Lobos moved to 6-15 overall.
Sul Ross State opened the game on a 4-0 run and held a lead until the 7:36 mark. A three-pointer from
Lauren Baker sparked a seven-point run to put UMHB up by six points with 6:20 left in the first period. Sul Ross State cut the gap to two but back-to-back three-pointers from
Alexis Carmosino and
Jaycie Brisco put the Cru up by eight. The Cru held on to at least a six-point lead for the duration of the frame, leading 27-18 after the first period. Carmosino and Brisco led the Cru with seven points each as the Cru shot 47.6 percent in the first quarter.
UMHB opened the second quarter with a jumper from
Remi Adeleke and held onto a double-digit lead until the 3:43 mark of the second frame when Emily Bunger hit a jumper to cut the Cru's lead to 29-38.
Lauren Baker responded with a layup for UMHB, but the Lobos responded again for another single-digit margin.
Jaycie Brisco and
Ashley Faux both hit a pair of foul shots to give UMHB a 44-31 lead as the Cru held the double-digit line, going into the half up 49-35.
Brisco led the Cru with 10 first-half points, followed by Baker and
Ella Hartmann with eight each. UMHB shot 42.9 percent in the second quarter for a 45.7 first-half showing.
Ashley Faux, Carmosino, Brisco and Adeleke each added five rebounds as UMHB led that stat 22-14.
Sul Ross State opened the second half with a jumper before Brisco responded on the other end for the Cru.
Alexis Carmosino gave the Cru a 21-point lead with a three-pointer at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter as UMHB went into the final ten minutes of action up 71-53.
UMHB held a high-margin of 23 in the final frame, earning a 90-74 win over the Lobos.
Lauren Baker led the Cru with 21 points while Carmosino added 16.
Jaycie Brisco finished with 15 total points while
Remi Adeleke and
Ella Hartmann each added 11. UMHB shot 45.9 percent in the contest with 34 field goals and 10 three-pointers. Brisco finished with a double-double, totaling 11 rebounds while Carmosino and Adeleke each added eight. UMHB outrebounded the Lobos 49-30 in the contest, forcing 18 turnovers on nine steals. Brisco led the Cru with seven assists, followed by
Ashley Faux with four.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, February 3
rd in a 1 p.m. contest against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
