BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split the doubleheader with McMurry University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improved to 15-3 on the season and 7-2 in American Southwest Conference action while the War Hawks moved to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in ASC play.
The War Hawks were first on the board with an RBI single to center field in the top of the second. Tyler Betts answered with the equalizer in the third with an RBI single to score Carson Riley.
McMurry fought back in the top of the fourth frame with an RBI triple followed by an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead. UMHB fought back in the bottom of the inning with a Weston Dean homer over the left field line to cut the gap to one. The Cru used a duo of three-up, three-down innings to hold the War Hawks to three, but could not overcome the deficit, falling 3-2.
Rahul Champaneri took the loss for UMHB, pitching six innings with two earned runs on seven hits. Jacob Haynes threw the final inning for the Cru. UMHB totaled six hits, led by Betts with two.
After a weather delay, UMHB opened game two with a pair of runs in the first inning. Talburt crossed home on a wild pitch before Carson Hagan scored on a sacrifice flyout from Dean. The Cru went up 5-0 in the third frame on a Kaden deBerardinis homerun also scoring Dean and Rhett Grosz.
The War Hawks got on the board in the top of the fifth with a RBI single. UMHB responded right back with an Elijah Rodriguez RBI single to score deBerardinis in the bottom of the frame. McMurry continued to fight, cutting the gap to three in the sixth inning.
UMHB extended the margin 11-3 in the eighth inning. deBerardinis got scoring started with a double to right field to score Grosz and Hagan. Bender followed that with a single up the middle to bring deBerardinis and Dean before scoring on a throw. The Cru closed the game with a double play to seal the 11-3 victory.
Keegan Symons (3-1) claimed the win for the Cru, throwing 5.1 innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Robert Sanford and Nicklas Fenner also made mound appearances for UMHB. The Cru recorded 14 hits, led by Hagan, deBerardinis and Bender with three each.
UMHB returns to action Tuesday, March 19th in a 6:00 p.m. contest against Southwestern University in Georgetown.
