Baseball falls at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to Southwestern University Tuesday evening in Georgetown. The Cru dropped to 15-4 on the season while the Pirates improved to 9-10 with the win.
 
Riley Bender opened scoring with a bases-loaded walk to score Rhett Grosz for a second-inning lead. The Pirates responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 margin. UMHB responded with an RBI single from Rhett Grosz in the third inning before Owen Stevenson hit a home run in the fourth to give Southwestern another one-run lead.
 
The Cru tied it again in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from Talburt before UMHB added another run off a single from Grosz. Southwestern responded with a four-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead on the Cru. Tyler Betts hit in Kaden deBerardinis with a single in the sixth to cut the gap before the Pirates put up single run frames in the sixth and seventh for a 9-5 lead. UMHB scored one more run in the eighth when Carson Riley hit in deBerardinis, but UMHB wasn't able to catch up, surrendering the 9-6 win to the Pirates.
 
Grosz led the Cru with three hits while Betts and Cline each added two. deBerardinis led UMHB with two runs scored while Grosz had a team-high two RBI.
 
UMHB threw six pitchers in the contest with Erick Roberts taking the loss. The Cru totaled six runs on 10 hits with five errors while the Pirates had nine runs on six hits with no errors.
 
The Cru returns to action on Friday, March 22nd in a 6 p.m. contest against East Texas Baptist University at Red Murff Field in Belton.
