BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split a Saturday doubleheader with the University of Texas at Dallas, falling 1-0 before rallying back for a 4-0 victory. The win improved the Cru to 19-11 overall while the Comets moved to 13-12.
UT Dallas scored in the first inning on a failed pick off attempt and held on to that lead.
Eileigh Whyte faced the minimum in the second and third innings and pitched out of a jam in the fourth to keep the lead at just one. UMHB threatened in the bottom of the third, loading the bases but a runner interference call ended the momentum.
The Cru put runners in the corners in the fourth but the Comets forced a groundout to get out of the inning. UT Dallas continued to get out of jams, ending the game in a 1-0 Comet win. Whyte took the loss for the Cru, throwing a complete seven innings with seven hits and just one run allowed. Whyte tallied five strikeouts in the outing. UMHB totaled eight hits, led by Polleschultz and Wright with two hits each.
UMHB used a big third inning to take a lead in game two.
Taylor Henken earned a bases-loaded walk before
Tori Skinner slammed a two-RBI double.
Bailey Frenzel brought Henken around with a sacrifice bunt to finish the inning with a 4-0 Crusader lead.
Chloee Miller put just one runner on in the fourth and faced the minimum in the fifth to keep the Comets scoreless through five.
The Cru threatened again in the sixth but a pick off took one runner out of scoring position and held UMHB scoreless in the frame. The Comets put on a pair of seventh-inning runners but UMHB pitched around the jam, sealing the 4-0 win.
Tori Skinner led the Cru with two hits while Frenzel and
Gabriela Vela each added one.
Chloee Miller earned the win in the circle, throwing five innings with just three hits allowed.
Bryton Wright closed the game for the Cru, going two innings with just two hits allowed.
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, April 17
th in a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Howard Payne University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
