Softball falls to Hardin-Simmons in ASC Tournament opener

MARSHALL, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team fell victim to a sixth-inning surge by Hardin-Simmons University in the 2025 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Thursday in Marshall.
 
Bailey Frenzel opened the contest with a solo home run, putting the Cru ahead 1-0. Hardin-Simmons responded in the bottom of that frame, hitting a sacrifice fly to equalize the game at one.
 
The contest went into scoreless play through four full frames with the Cowgirls finally breaking the drought in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits. UMHB mounted a comeback in the seventh, scoring one run off an RBI single from Ryleigh Mills but HSU got out of the jam, ending the contest with a 5-2 Hardin-Simmons win.
 
Lindsey Polleschultz led the Cru with two hits while four other Crusaders each added one. Eileigh Whyte threw 52 innings in the circle for the Cru, giving up seven hits and five runs with two strikeouts. UMHB totaled two runs on six hits while the Cowgirls had five runs on seven hits.
 
UMHB returns to tournament play on Friday, May 9th in a 1 p.m. contest. The Cru will play the loser of East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau in an elimination match.
