Bruder scores career-high in overtime contest with St. Thomas

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team fell to the University of St. Thomas (Texas) 71-66 Tuesday evening in overtime.
 
St. Thomas opened the contest with a 10-6 lead and held the lead until 1:10 when Josie Bruder hit a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 10. The Celts added another layup in the final second to go back on top. UMHB answered with four consecutive points to take a two-point lead but the Celts retook the high ground at 17-16 and did not surrender it again. UMHB fought back to pull within two for a 24-22 UST lead at the half.
 
Bruder led the Cru with 12 points in the first half while Pierce Sheppler had five rebounds and Rachel Okoye tallied two steals.
 
Okoye opened the second half with a three-pointer, putting the Cru on top by one. UMHB continued a 12-2 run, forcing the Celts to call a timeout at 6:24 with a 34-26 UMHB lead. St. Thomas fought back, outscoring the Cru 18-7 to close out the frame with a 44-41 lead.
 
Josie Bruder put the Cru back on top with a three-pointer at 5:40. The Celts tied it at 50 but another three-pointer from Bruder put the Cru back on top, hitting back-to-back threes to keep UMHB on the high ground. The Celts went back up 60-58 but a fadeaway shot from Pierce Sheppler evened the contest at 60 in the final minute. Neither team was able to score again, sending the contest into overtime.
 
The Celts struck first in overtime, draining a three-pointer. UMHB hit a pair of foul shots but the Celts made a jumper for a 65-62 lead halfway through. Bruder made two more free throws to pull the Cru within one but the Celts made a layup at 42.4 seconds and the ensuing foul shot to go up by four. Okoye made two free throws to cut the gap back to two but the Celts held onto the lead, earning the 71-66 victory.
 
Josie Bruder finished with a career-high 29 points while Rachel Okoye followed with 23, also tying her career high. Okoye was the team leader with eight rebounds and six assists.
 
The Cru returns to action in a 3 p.m. (ET) contest at the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, January 10th.
