GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team defeated Southwestern University 6-3 Saturday afternoon. This win improves the Cru's record to 7-3 on the season, while the Pirates fall to 0-3.
The Cru opened with an early 2-0 lead courtesy of a Riley Bender double to get the streak started. Taylor McDaniel drew a walk before Nolan Williams hit a two-RBI double to bring Bender and McDaniel home. UMHB added three more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from Williams and JC Hughes, making it a 5-0 game.
The fifth inning opened with three straight hits from the Cru. Bender started it off with a double, followed by McDaniel with a single. Williams rounded it out with an RBI double down the left field line to score Bender, extending the Cru's margin to 6-0. The Pirates earned one back in the seventh, along with two more in the bottom of the ninth to cut UMHB's lead in half, but the Cru was able to seal the 6-3 victory.
Nolan Williams led the Cru at the plate going three for four with two doubles and four RBI. Riley Bender added two doubles and one RBI, along with Cameron Talburt who tallied two hits in five at-bats.
Starting pitcher Reid Davis earned his first win on the mound, throwing six complete innings with five strikeouts, four hits, and no earned runs.
UMHB returns to action at Red Murff Field on Friday, February 27th in a 3:00pm matchup against Macalester College.
