BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Schreiner University 3-0 in the American Southwest Conference opener Wednesday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru 10-3 on the season, opening conference play at 1-0.
UMHB jumped to a lead early in the first set, taking a five-point lead at the 12-7 mark. The Cru pushed that lead to eight at the 21-14 mark and went on to take the first set 25-17.
Schreiner answered with a lead in the second set, but UMHB responded with a 4-1 run, tying the set at 14. The set saw two more tied scores before UMHB constructed a 3-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. UMHB stayed on top, going ahead by as many as five at the end and winning the set 25-20.
The third set played closely with tied scores at 16, 18 and 20. UMHB came out of a timeout at the 20-20 mark to bury three consecutive points for a 23-20 lead. Both teams exchanged points before the Cru secured the 25-21 win in the third, sweeping the match at 3-0.
Lilli Sandoval led the Cru with 12 kills, followed by Ava Ribakovs with 11. Natalie Hughes and Addison Yates each added seven kills as UMHB hit .343 on 108 total attacks in the match. Chloe Brandt anchored the offense with 22 assists, followed by Ava Ribakovs with 14. Defensively, Angie Garcia led with 15 digs followed by Kaysen Miller with 13 and Ava Ribakovs with 12.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, September 26th in a 1 p.m. contest against Howard Payne University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
