Randy Smith

Randy Smith begins his fifth season as an assistant for the Cru working with the kickers, punters and snappers. During this time, Smith has twice produced both an all-American kicker and punter, an ASC Special Teams Player of the Year, multiple all-ASC kickers/punters and a kicking unit that has set numerous UMHB and ASC records for field goals made and attempted, points attempted and single season scoring records. Smith begins his third season as the Cru Academic Coordinator.

Smith is a 26-year veteran of the United States Army as a Special Operations Officer and has served eight combat tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa. Smith has also coached collegiately at Louisiana Tech University, the University of Southern Mississippi and various high schools across the country. Smith also coached in Europe during his military career and has coached several NFL kickers, including a Super Bowl winner.

Smith kicked collegiately at Auburn University and Southern Arkansas University and set school records for most consecutive PATs and longest field goal while at Southern Arkansas. Following college, he signed professional contracts with the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers as well as the Charlotte Rage of the ARENA football League.

Smith is a graduate of Texas A&M with a Master’s degree in Sports Management and Louisiana Tech University where he received his first Master’s degree in Counseling. Smith completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Louisiana Tech University as well followed by an Ed. D from the University of North Carolina in Educational Leadership and his certification as an Assistant Professor while serving at the National Defense University. Smith and his wife Valerie met during his playing days at Auburn University and were actually married inside Jordan-Hare stadium. Valerie teaches high school English and has both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Auburn University.
