Biography
Sterling is a two-year starter in the backcourt for the Cru and he blossomed into one of the team’s top offensive weapons last season. Sterling should claim a starting guard job again this year. 2010-11: Sterling was an Honorable Mention All-West Division selection after averaging 10.4 points per game. He also grabbed 3.7 rebounds per game, posted 31 steals and led the team with 86 assists. Sterling scored 20 or more points three times, pouring in a season-high at Louisiana College. He had a double-double in the home victory over Texas Lutheran. 2009-10: Sterling was an Honorable Mention All-West Division selection and also earned MVP honors at the ASC Championship Tournament. He played in all 29 games and started 27, averaging 10.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Sterling added 70 assists and 24 steals. He reached double figures in scoring 17 times and poured in a season-high 23 against U.T.-Tyler. Sterling grabbed a season-high nine rebounds against Howard Payne and had a season-best seven assists against Mississippi College. 2008-09: Sterling played in 21 games for the Cru as a reserve point guard. He averaged 3.8 points and 1.5 rebounds per game and also dished off 27 assists. Sterling posted season highs with 11 points against ETBU and Lake Forest. He had four assists at Concordia. High School: Sterling was an All-District and Academic All-District basketball player at Austin High School, where he was named MVP of the Central Texas High School All-Star Classic. He also lettered in cross-country. Personal: Sterling is the son of Lynette and the late Joe Phillips. He was born September 15, 1989 and is majoring in business management at UMHB.
