Marshall, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team could not overcome East Texas Baptist's huge advantage from the free-throw line and the Cru fell to the Tigers 88-76 Monday night in Marshall. The loss drops the UMHB men to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. ETBU improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the ASC with the victory.
UMHB scored the game's first five points, but ETBU answered with a 6-0 run. The two teams would trade leads through most of the first half with the Cru leading by as many as five points. The Tigers would open up an 11-point lead before UMHB closed with a brief run to cut it 43-35 at halftime. The Cru would cut the lead in half, closing to within four points on three different occasions early in the second half. But ETBU once again took control of the game and stretched the lead to 12 points at 68-56 with 6:25 remaining. The Cru would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Tigers iced the game from the free-throw line.
ETBU would out rebounded the Cru 45-33 and the Tigers hit 29-38 from the free-throw line. UMHB only shot 17 free-throws and the Cru hit just eight of those. UMHB shot 41 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. The Cru turned ball over 10 times compared to 16 turnovers for the Tigers.
Jeremy LeGarde topped ETBU with 24 points and Deba Egharevba added 21 points and 12 rebounds. Jacob Turnipseed also posted a double-double for the Tigers, finishing with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds from his guard position.
The Cru will now return home to host a pair of ASC games this weekend. UMHB will welcome LeTourneau University to the Mayborn Campus Center for a 7:30 PM start on Thursday night before closing out the week with a 3:00 PM tip-off against U.T.-Tyler on Saturday.
