Men's basketball cruises past LeTourneau 87-56

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team used a hot shooting night and a huge rebounding edge to roll to an 87-56 victory over LeTourneau University Thursday night in Belton. The Cru improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the ASC on the season.
            UMHB held LeTourneau to 27 percent shooting from the field in the first half and out rebounded the Jackets 36-15 on the way to a 33-21 halftime lead. The Cru would stretch it out from there in the second half, leading by as many as 35 points and never letting the Yellowjackets get closer than 14 points.

            UMHB finished with a dominating 59-29 edge on the glass and the Cru shot 60 percent from the field in the second half. UMHB hit 8-22 from three-point range but went just 13-31 from the free-throw line. LeTourneau shot 36 percent from the field and went 6-21 beyond the three-point line.

            Robert Moore led UMHB with 18 points and Dean Pele added 17 points and seven rebounds. Greg Wiernas grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. James Allen and Sully Haywood also reached double figures in scoring for the Cru with 11 points and 10 points respectively. Thirteen different players scored for UMHB in the victory.

            Kendrae Carter had a big night for LeTourneau, pouring in a game-high 25 points, but no other Yellowjacket scored more than eight. Carter also had a team-high five rebounds.

            The Cru will continue its home stand with a 3:00 PM tip-off against U.T.-Tyler on Saturday. The UMHB men will then have ten days off before returning to action with road games at Louisiana College and Mississippi College.
