Seguin, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team could not overcome Texas Lutheran's edge from the free-throw line and the Cru dropped a 56-53 decision to the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in Seguin. The drops the UMHB men to 12-3 overall and 8-3 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. TLU improves to 6-7 overall and 5-5 in the ASC with the victory.
The Cru would hold a three-point edge after a first-half that featured six ties. Texas Lutheran would grab a 52-48 lead on Michael Flores' three-pointer with 1:25 remaining.
James Allen would convert a three-point play to pull the Cru to within 52-51 with 30 seconds left. UMHB would foul Jaren English with 10 seconds left and English calmly sank both shots to make it a 54-51 TLU lead. Allen would drive the length of the floor to cut it to 54-53, but Flores buried two free-throws at the other end to give the Bulldogs a 56-53 lead. UMHB would turn the ball over on the inbounds pass as the Bulldogs hold on for the victory.
Sterling Phillips came off the bench to lead the Cru with 16 points and
Dean Pele added 13 more off the bench for UMHB. Ten different players scored for the Cru and
Greg Wiernas grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Isaac Williams came up big for TLU, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards. Flores added 10 points off the bench for the Bulldogs.
UMHB shot 38 percent from the field and went 16-24 from the free-throw line. The Cru also turned the ball over 25 times. TLU went 24-37 from the stripe and shot 39 percent from the floor in the victory.
The UMHB men will now return home for a pair of crucial ASC West Division match-ups next week. The Cru men will host Hardin-Simmons University for a 7:30 PM start on Thursday night before closing out the week with a 3:00 PM tip-off against McMurry University on Saturday.
