Women's basketball tops Howard Payne 75-64

Brownwood, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team grabbed a late lead and then iced the game from the free-throw line as the Cru posted a 75-64 victory over Howard Payne University Thursday night in Brownwood. The UMHB women improve to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in ASC play on the season.
            UMHB opened the game with a 10-4 run and led 22-11 before Howard Payne stormed back. The Yellow Jackets closed the first half with a 17-6 to tie the game at 28. HPU would score the first six points of the second half to take a 34-28 lead, but UMHB would retake the lead for good on a pair of Lauren Reece free-throws to make it a 61-60 game with 4:54 left to play. Caitlin Barganier's three-pointer would give the Cru a 68-61 lead with 1:50 to go. Tiffany Warner would hit a three for the Yellow Jackets to cut it to 68-64, but UMHB would shut out HPU the rest of the way and the Cru iced the game with free-throws from Barganier and Brittany Zamora down the stretch.
            Landie Thompson had a huge game for the Cru, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Barganier added 11 points and she hit 3-5 from three-point range. Zamora added 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists against her former teammates.
            Brittany Roberson topped Howard Payne with 25 points and she was the only Yellow Jacket player to reach double figures. Three different players had six rebounds apiece for HPU in the game.
            The Cru shot 43 percent from the field in the victory and out rebounded the Yellow Jackets 46-38. UMHB also held HPU to 6-22 shooting from three-point range while hitting 8-16 from beyond the arc.
            The Cru women will close out their road trip with a 1:00 PM tip-off at Sul Ross State University Saturday in Alpine. UMHB will then return home to host Howard Payne and Sul Ross State next week at the Mayborn Campus Center.
