Women's basketball edged by U.T.-Dallas 60-59

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team fought back from a double-digit first-half lead only to see the game decided by two free-throws with one second left as the Cru lost to U.T.-Dallas 60-59 Saturday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops the UMHB women to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in American Southwest Conference play. The Comets improve to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the ASC with the victory.
            The Cru battled back from a four-point halftime deficit and took its first lead of the second half at 35-33 on Caitlin Barganier's jumper at the 16:48 mark. The two teams would trade the lead the rest of the way and neither team would lead by more than three points. UMHB would lead 56-55 with 2:36 left before Brittany Zamora hit a jumper to make it 58-55 Cru. Tarneisha Scott would convert a three-point play for the Comets to tie the game at 58 with 1:39 left. Lindsay Eaton would hit one of two free-throws with 55 seconds remaining to make it a 59-58 UMHB lead. Both teams would miss shots down the stretch before the Comets took possession with 12 seconds left. Lyndsey Smith would force up a desperation shot with one second left but drew a foul call. Smith then buried both free-throws and the Cru would not get off a shot in the final second.
            UTD dominated the early going, building a 22-10 lead in the first 13 minutes of the first half. UMHB would fight back, cutting it to 30-26 at halftime.
            Zamora led the Cru with 19 points on 4-7 shooting. Eaton had 10 points for the Cru and Landie Thompson had nine points off the bench. Stacie Stephens led UMHB with five rebounds. The Cru shot 38 percent from the field and went 5-15 from three-point range.
            Scott had a huge night for the Comets, scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing a game-high six rebounds. Smith added nine points and Nikki Kosary had seven assists for UTD. The Comets shot 53 percent from the field and went 5-11 from three-point range. UTD also out rebounded UMHB 28-25 in the game.
            UMHB will return to action with three games next week. The Cru women will open the week with a 5:30 PM tip-off at Concordia Texas Monday in Austin. UMHB will then return home to take on Schreiner University in a 5:30 PM start on Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM tip at Texas Lutheran University Saturday in Seguin.
