Kerrville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team broke open a tight game early in the second half and the Cru held on for an 80-66 victory over Schreiner University Thursday night in Kerrville. The UMHB men improve to 18-6 overall and 14-6 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 10-14 overall and 8-12 in the ASC on the season.
                                
Schreiner opened up a seven-point lead early in the first half, but the Cru closed the first half with a 9-2 run to take a 34-31 lead at the break. UMHB would push the lead to 13 points in the first three minutes of the second half and the Cru never looked back. Schreiner would not get closer than eight points the rest of the way and UMHB would lead by as many as 22 points before coasting to the victory.
 
Dean Pele led the Cru with 24 points and he hit 8-11 from three-point range. Pele finished just two three-pointers short of the ASC single-game record. Marlon Miller added 13 points off the bench and Sterling Phillips also reached double figures with 10 points.
 
Riley Battle led Schreiner with 24 points in his final home game with the Mountaineers. Charles Hobbs added 11 points for Schreiner.
 
UMHB out rebounded the Mountaineers 43-26 and the Cru went 10-20 from three-point range. UMHB shot 48 percent from the field and held Schreiner to 36 percent shooting in the game.
 
The UMHB men will now return home to close out the regular season with a 3:00 PM tip-off against Texas Lutheran on Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center. The Cru has already clinched a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament and could finish as high as the #2 seed from the ASC West Division. Saturday's game will also be the final home game for Cru seniors Dean Pele and Colby Waller.
