Women's basketball tops Schreiner 70-49

Kerrville, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used a smothering second-half defensive effort to put the game away as the Cru rolled to a 70-49 victory over Schreiner University Thursday evening in Kerrville. The UMHB women improve to 15-9 overall and 12-8 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Cru women also stay in a tie with Concordia Texas for fourth place in the ASC West Division and UMHB can clinch a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament with a victory Saturday in the regular season finale. Schreiner falls to 5-19 overall and 3-17 in the ASC with the loss.
 
The Cru opened the game by scoring the first five points before Schreiner battled back to take a 19-18 lead. UMHB bounced back and took a 44-32 halftime lead. The Cru would stretch it out in the second half, holding the Mountaineers to just 17 points and leading by as many as 29 points before cruising to the 21-point win.
 
Lindsay Eaton topped the Cru with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jenny Black added 11 points for UMHB and ten different players scored.
 
Olivia Swarner led Schreiner with 11 points and seven rebounds, but she was held scoreless in the second half. Kristy Guerra added eight points for the Mountaineers.
 
UMHB shot 49 percent from the field in the game and held the Mountaineers to 22 percent shooting in the second half. The Cru out rebounded Schreiner 32-29 and forced 18 turnovers in the victory.
 
UMHB will now return home to host Texas Lutheran University in a 1:00 PM tip-off in the regular season finale on Saturday. The Cru can clinch a sixth straight berth in the ASC Championship Tournament with a victory over the Bulldogs. Saturday's game will also be the final home game for the five seniors on the UMHB roster.
